Office Lighting Can Improve Work Efficiency!

A well-lit office increases productivity and can help with the overall work atmosphere. Using bright lights for the entire area is not necessarily the best idea, as some jobs are better accomplished in more dimly lit areas. So before heading out to buy brighter light bulbs for all of the work areas, take the time to learn some important information about office lighting and its role in task efficiency.

Nature of Work – Determining the needs for lighting according to the nature of work done in each area is very important. Fluorescent lights may perform better in larger areas but are not necessarily enough to illuminate an entire room. Supplying each desk with individual lamps to provide enough brightness for the job being done may be a better choice. If a large amount of paper work is done, there must be enough brightness for reading; however, if a considerable amount of time is spent on the computer, dimmer surroundings may be preferred. Glare Effect – Glare reflected on a computer screen for any length of time can eventually result in a headache by the end of the day. To eliminate glare, try adjusting the computer monitor by moving it to a position that will eliminate or at least minimize glare from overhead bulbs. If the glare is caused by the sun’s reflection, rearranging the entire room could be the solution. If it is impossible to turn the screen away from the window, try adding blinds. Unfortunately, all of these possible solutions may not necessarily solve the problem. If adjusting a monitor or rearranging the layout of a room does not bring relief, then buying a glare guard for the monitor or purchasing a new monitor with a built-in glare guard may be the only option. Increased Productivity – A vast amount of research has been done about the relationship of employee comfort and work productivity. A company that provides a certain level of comfort for their workers can expect good results in efficiency levels and consequently an increase in overall productivity. Proper lighting can result in overall employee satisfaction so investing in a system that allows for individual control over lighting preferences is a good investment. Customer Concerns – Consider using a system that appeals to both employees and clients. It may be helpful to get feedback from customers about preferences, especially in offices that are service-oriented. Very dim surroundings may not be desirable for some individuals, just as a very bright environment may appeal to certain people; the best choice is to be sensitive to the needs of all people who will be in this environment. Anyone who is straining and having a hard time reading information, then the addition of more fluorescent bulbs or changing the existing one for brighter ones may be appropriate. On the other hand, glare that requires shielding eyes with hands would more likely need frosted or opaque fixtures in the office to lessen the glare.

The proper office lighting can play a significant role in boosting employee efficiency, so it is important to never assume that the current system is fine and needs no adjustment. An ambient feeling due to proper office lighting can make every employee want to return to their job the next day and customers will be equally satisfied with their sales experience. Indeed, office lighting can play a very large role in work efficiency!
